Before You Respond
- Keep at least one identifying detail private.
- Do not share your home address, passwords, one-time codes, full identity numbers, bank details, or unnecessary personal information.
- Treat account, institution, and trust labels as useful context, not a guarantee.
- Use ReturnHaven's claim or recovery-lead flow before moving to private contact when that flow is available.
- If a message feels threatening, manipulative, or unrelated, stop responding, block contact, and report it.
Verifying Property
Ask the claimant for facts that were not visible in the public post, such as:
- a distinctive mark, scratch, sticker, or hidden feature
- a partial serial, IMEI, registration, receipt, or document detail
- the contents of a bag or wallet
- a lock-screen detail or another fact that does not require unlocking the device
- the specific loss context
Do not ask for passwords, PINs, one-time codes, or full financial credentials. An accepted claim assists the recovery process but is not a court decision about ownership. If competing claims cannot be resolved safely, pause the handover and seek help from an appropriate institution or authority.
Planning A Meeting
- Prefer daylight and a busy public place.
- Use a verified institution, community-partner desk, police station, security office, school office, place of worship office, or other recognized location where appropriate.
- Tell someone you trust where you are going and share the public meeting details.
- Bring another trusted adult when the item is valuable or the situation feels uncertain.
- Do not invite an unknown person to your home.
- Do not enter an unknown person's vehicle or private property.
- Leave immediately if the location or behavior differs materially from what was agreed.
During Handover
- Recheck the private proof before releasing property.
- Avoid displaying unrelated private contents or documents.
- Record the handover honestly in ReturnHaven after it occurs.
- Use a lightweight witness, pickup code, note, or institution confirmation when the situation justifies it.
- A recipient photo or signature should be optional unless a lawful, clearly disclosed higher-risk process requires it. Never secretly capture sensitive evidence.
ReturnHaven does not require payment to establish ownership. Do not hand over money, credentials, or access codes because someone threatens to withhold an item.
If You Suspect Theft Or Fraud
- Do not confront, chase, threaten, detain, or attempt to recover property by force.
- Preserve relevant messages and case identifiers.
- Report the account or content through ReturnHaven.
- Contact the appropriate police or authority when a crime may have occurred.
- Do not publicly accuse a person unless you have a lawful basis and understand the risk of misidentification.
Missing-Person Safety
ReturnHaven is a community information tool, not an emergency-response or investigation service.
- Contact the appropriate police, emergency service, family, guardian, or responsible authority promptly.
- Do not delay an official report while waiting for a ReturnHaven alert or response.
- Share only the minimum information needed to identify and safely assist.
- Do not publish a child's routine, exact home address, school schedule, medical history, or other details that could increase risk.
- Do not approach or transport a child or vulnerable person in a way that creates further danger; contact an appropriate authority or responsible guardian.
- Treat sightings as unverified until responsibly assessed.
- Never use a missing-person post to stalk, punish, pressure, or locate someone who may be avoiding an unsafe person.
Institution And Community-Partner Handovers
A participating institution can provide a more accountable meeting point, but its presence does not guarantee ownership or eliminate risk.
Institution staff should:
- confirm they are acting through the correct institution account
- keep private proof and contact information restricted
- identify the staff member handling release where appropriate
- record when and to whom the item was released
- pause a disputed or suspicious release
- avoid demanding unnecessary sensitive evidence
After Handover
- Confirm completion only after the handover actually occurs.
- Report a false confirmation, threat, substitution, or unresolved dispute.
- Delete unnecessary copies of another person's evidence from your own device.
- If you later learn the property went to the wrong person, contact ReturnHaven and the appropriate authority promptly; do not attempt forceful recovery.
